Anniversary Shenanigans Part II: Stuffed Pumpkin

Image
My SO got it into his head that he really wanted me to make a stuffed pumpkin. Apparently his ex had made one once and it was super cool and tasty (and I'll forgive him asking me to make something his ex made, as he is generally wonderful and sweet, and rarely asks for anything).  So to the internet I went! She had apparently made some kind of stew inside of it...but I was thinking more of a solid stuffing. I found this recipe  http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-savory-stuffed-pumpkin-with-sausage-and-gruyere-225029 Good jumping off point! Now I'm not a huge fan of bread pudding. Or french toast. Egg in the nest is about the best egg/bread mash up if you ask me. But I AM a huge fan of cornbread stuffing.  So I made a list for SO to pick up ingredients and sent him off to the store.  Well what he came back with...well wasn't exactly what was on the list. I had planned to use unflavored pure cornbread stuffing that I've had prior experience with, whic...

Anniversary Food Shenanigans Part I: Hodge's in Cleveland

Image
Last week it was my and my sig other's one year anniversary.  Therefore, there were lots of food related shenanigans! Now for this one: I can't claim the most discerning palate ever, so feel free to take this review with as many grains of salt as you'd like. I ended up getting free Cavaliers tickets in a promotion (I actually got featured on a commercial too! Fancy!) and so I planned a night out to go to Hodge's in downtown Cleveland, and then go to the game.  They usually have a Tuesday two dinners, an app, and a bottle of wine special, but sadly they did not on game/event days. So first off service was wonderful. My SO was late (ha!) so the waitress checked on me multiple times and made sure I had everything I needed in the meantime.  The interior was also cozy while still being modern in a way I didn't expect.  Plus they actually had the heat on which was GREAT since I often get cold in restaurants. Once he finally got there she brought out some warm skill...

Buttercup Squash: decorative gourd or dinner?

Image
It's  decorative gourd season ! "Buttercup squash?" you may be thinking..."you mean butternut squash? I mean what kind of food blogger are you??" No...butterCUP squash... Pretty much a green weird pumpkin Now I encountered buttercup squash on the blog of a college classmate,  Tales of the Basil Queen , which sadly doesn't update anymore (which is a damn shame the recipes are GREAT).   I love winter squash in general. Acorn squash, butternut squash, spaghetti squash: all awesome.  But this one seems a bit more obscure.  I found one at the North Union Farmer's Market on Shaker Square a few weeks ago and couldn't NOT buy it.  So I decided to roast it up and I'd figure out what to do with it later.   So I figured I'd halve it, scoop it out, then throw it on a roasting pan.   Now...what I learned pretty quick is don't use this knife.  You know why? It gets stuck. Whomp whomp.  But this one....

Baking Cakes is for Fancy People: Buttermilk Layer Cake

Image
A friend had given me a container of cake flour when he moved away from Cleveland, which I have been staring at  for months. But cakes from scratch are for fancy people. Plus I can't have that much cake in my house by myself. My friend from high school was up visiting this weekend, and since my birthday was last week I figured, why not? So I consulted my trusty Joy of Cooking.  They had a Buttermilk Layer Cake recipe that sounded interesting.  I'd just gotten a powdered buttermilk mix (yeah yeah, not the same but whatever), so it sounded perfect! So we got started.... I have never oiled and floured a baking pan.  It's so damn finicky.  But if I'm doing fancy baking, gotta do it the whole way. Next we measured out the butter and sugar, and gradually combine until fluffy.... The butter was kind of tough to work with... Just butter . Butter and sugar.                    ...
